Review by Craig Whittington
These three guys are Mark Kasanoff, John Mills and Al Gomez. They’ve been the Texas Horns for 25 years. Eleven of the thirteen tracks are originals and five of them are instrumentals. They invited friends to record with them and these include, but are not limited to, Jimmy Vaughn, Carolyn Wonderland, Marcia Ball, Anson Funderburgh and Mike Zito. There ain’t no sitting still when this is playing, you feel the energy from the horns. I did tell myself, before listening, that songs written by a horn section might not be as diverse as I like. Of course, I was a complete dumba** because this album has more variety than most.
I like the title track with Wonderland belting out the vocals and the tune Die with My Blues On. We’ve all heard a Beatles cover or two, but their I Want You (She’s So Heavy) hasn’t sounded like this before. Expect some tex-mex seasoning sprinkled throughout. Also expect the guest vocals to be great and to fit in a way that a less experienced artist might not pull off. High quality musicianship found here.
