From Tulsa, Oklahoma, the self-taught guitarist got his start in the blues business touring in the backing band for Oklahoma legend, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown in the early ‘80’s. After paying some dues, doing session guitar work in L.A., Scott formed a blues band in the early ‘90’s, and returned back home to Tulsa in 1996. A member of the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame, he has released thirteen albums on a number of small labels. Zero-2-Sixty is his latest, released in January, 2023.
With the exception of a few songs like “Soul Harbor”, the twelve songs on this CD are mostly rollicking juke joint blues, the kind that will either have you up shaking your groove thing, or simply tapping your fingers, depending on your personal energy level. If they don’t get you up out of your seat, you should probably seriously consider a regular exercise routine. The songs are mostly originals, either written or co-written by Ellison, with one notable exception, a cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s estimable “I Wouldn’t Treat a Dog” from his Dreamer album. Ellison had covered “Ain’t No Love (In the Heart of the City)” from the same album on his previous release, also with great success. Scott has a very listenable voice as a vocalist and really strong guitar skills as well. Zero-2-Sixty definitely fits in the “recommend” category.
