Shemekia’s eleventh album (all but one Telarc release in 2012 with Alligator Records) is dropping on August 30, 2024. The fact that I’m reviewing it the same day shows that I’m an industry insider (my head is swelling with self-importance).
The twelve songs on the album were all composed by band members and producers for this album, except for two, the Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles number “Heaven Help Us All”, and Shemekia’s father’s song “Down on Bended Knee”. None of the songs particularly grabbed me as “must have” selections (“Down on Bended Knee” was certainly better by Johnny “Clyde”), but none of them were stinkers either. The singing was just what you would expect from Shemekia, and the band was flawless, it just didn’t bring anything to the blues that we didn’t already have.
I give Blame It on Eve 2 stars out of 5.
