Youth Blues Jam Report

by Elise DV, Roving Blues Reporter

Coyote Bill and The Brood were the jam hosts on April 5, 2025, at The Hideout. They are: Jessie Glennon, guitar and vocals; Haley Burke, guitar; Brooke Horde, drums; Adam Burriss, bass; and Coyote Bill on guitar and vocals.

About 30 people were in the audience when I arrived, a fair showing for a Saturday afternoon. Uncle Billy announced that even more young people were expected to show up and jam than the ones already present. I arrived when the band was deep into a tasty slow blues.

They covered songs such as Love Me Like a Man, Big Boss Man, and Goin’ Down. Sam Bartelt, Bill’s son, joined in on bass in a really touching musical family moment, playing Done Somebody Wrong.

I asked Coyote Bill how the KCBS could support the Youth Jam in getting the word out. He said to contact music schools, and independent music teachers. The Youth Blues Jam is a great way to learn jam skills in a supportive environment. The Hideout is a family restaurant so it’s fine for kids to play music there. When Bill was running the jam at the Westport Saloon, the jazz conservatory teachers would send their students there, as it was the closest jam, and they could get out of their jazz element, yet still relate and play the blues, to stretch their abilities.

There will be another Youth Blues Jam in May at The Hideout, and Coyote Bill is working on another venue as well. Stay tuned for that date!

We hope that this matinee show will draw blues fans who appreciate afternoon jams. The Kansas City Blues Society is truly excited to support this venture to get more young folks involved in the Blues. We encourage you to come out and support the next generation of local musicians — and keep the Blues alive!
