Review by Craig Whittington

This is Miss Bix’s second blues release. Not to imply that she is new to making records, writing songs or performing, just not labeled blues. In 1991 her (Leslie Letven then) album Make It Right went to #12 on the jazz charts. She still has a sultry voice. She wrote all of the songs on Bring It, a challenge directed to the pandemic, social injustice and CA fires (which burned down her home). She’s a good song writer and a great singer and has a long list of band members with the skill to give each song it’s own feel and instrumentation. She has a lot of musical tricks in her toolbox and the variety keeps it very listenable. Keeshea Pratt, an IBC winner, joins in on Red Walls, a song about racial inequality. Horns are featured on a few songs (Mr. Bix on sax), and the Mississippi saxophone on some songs. Pianos and organs are present throughout and one song just has Miss Bix, on vocals and acoustic blues guitar. There is a lot going on here musically and I like it. I have always seen jazz and blues as branches from the same tree. These songs tell their stories well as Miss Bix whispers and belts, talks and draws you in. There is lots to enjoy, I know I haven’t identified all there is yet, but I’m an old man so get off me! Hehe, that line clears the aisle at the grocery store.
