Review by Mixmaster Linc

I first reviewed Dom Martin’s Spain to Italy (from 2020) back in February, and now I’ve run across his brand new release, Buried in the Hail, that came out this September. The album is fairly short (less than forty minutes), but the music is strong. It opens and closes with short acoustic instrumentals, and sizzles at most points in between. The album contains two ballads, “Government” which comes off as kind of flat for me, and “The Fall” that feels very rich and foreboding, and has nice Celtic undertones. The balance of the songs tred the ground between blues/rock and blues, with powerful, gritty vocals and Dom’s signature exquisite guitar work. The one that stands alone in the group is the only cover on the album, Willie Nelson’s “Crazy.” When I first heard it, perhaps because it was so different from any other cover I’ve heard of the song, I not impressed. However, when I listened through it a second time to prepare this review, it really grew on me, and now I think it’s pretty cool.

In total, I give the album 4.5 out of 5 stars, well worth the listen.
