On their third Alligator Records album, Get Your Back Into It!, Chicago native guitarist Nick Moss and New Jersey native harpman Dennis Gruenling – together with Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, Taylor Streiff on keyboards and Pierce Downer on drums – bring a hard hitting selection of new tunes that harken back to the Chicago, Texas, and West Coast blues sounds from the 1940’ through the 60’s. Guest musicians include saxophonist “Sax” Gordon Beadle and, on “Out of the Woods”, organist “Brother” John Kattke. “Man On The Move” and “Your Bark Is Worse Than Your Bite,” were written by Gruenling, and he handled their vocals, while the other twelve tunes were written and sung by Moss.
The songs on the album are mostly short and punchy, with only one coming in over 4:10, the deep blues, “Living in Heartache”. All of the musicians are definitely in top form, and you’ll be bopping along with every song you listen to. My first reminiscence when I heard this album, was the Alligator Records era Paladins, or the James Harman Band, for those of you old enough to remember them (insert sheepish grin here).
The album gets a definite “thumbs up” from me, and I recommend obtaining completely (not just singles), because there is literally, not a bad cut on it.
