Review by Charles "Dutch" Metzker and Tom "Trashmouth" Baker

Piper & the Hard Times is an American blues rock band based in Nashville, Tennessee. The band consists of Al “Piper” Green (lead vocals), Steve Eagon (guitar), Dave Colella (drums), Amy Frederick (keyboard) and Parker Hawkins (bass).

The band was the 2024 winner in the Best Band category of the International Blues Challenge, a global competition held annually in Memphis, Tennessee.

Their 2024 album, Revelation, debuted at number one on the Billboard Magazine’s Top Blues Albums chart and was nominated in 2025 for a Blues Music Award.

They are billed as a blues-rock band which is apparent in the first track:

Track 1. Eagon/Green. Good Company (3:59) – definitely leans towards the rock genre, hard driving music.

Track 2. Eagon, D.Dye. Now I’m Lovin’ You (4:17) – nice song with a funk groove

Track 3. Eagon. Tear It Down (5:16) has a vibe similar to Tommy Castro, nice

Track 4. Green, Jawaskia Lake, Eagon. Cowboy Gucci (3:53) – great rhythm and another funk groove

Track 5. Eagon/Green. In The Meantime (5:05) – has great bass and drums

Track 6. Eagon/Green. Turn the Tables (2:20) – a slow blues tune with very good guitar work

Track 7. Eagon, Green, and Colella. Runaround Man (4:13) – Fast paced tune with a “train beat” background.

Track 8. Eagon/Green. Cheatin’s Gotta End (3:42) – Everything really works on this one – lyrics are great.

Track 9. Eagon. Keep It to Yourself (4:08) – a very good song with top guitar work.

Track 10. Eagon. Not Your Fault (4:26) – this one is an impressive song with funky soul

Track 11. Eagon/Green. My Place (3:44) – a hard driving tune with Bonamassa
vibe

Track 12. Eagon/Green/Colella. Those Days (7:58) – an extended song that has a lot of soulful stuff.

Vocals are very good throughout and the same goes for the instrumental work. Tom gives this one a 5/10 and Dutch gives it a 7/10.
