Review by Betty Berry

I had the pleasure of enjoying Ms. Thomas’ music and learning her story at the Big Blues Bender blues festival last month. Although I knew and loved her father, Rufus Thomas’ music, and her sister, Carla Thomas, I was unaware of this Thomas daughter and sibling and her music. Much of her career has been in the voiceover and commercial end of the music business. Her music didn’t fall in the category of traditional blues, but she included enough to whet your curiosity and make you want to hear more. I found her music to be a pleasant surprise and believe you will enjoy this album.

A member of Memphis Music Royalty with father, Rufus, sister, Carla, and brother, Marvell (R.I.P.), Vaneese carries forward the rich heritage of Memphis soul and R&B; music that has touched generations and crossed many divides. At the same time, she has combined all the influences of her background and experience – R&B, gospel, blues, and jazz – to cultivate a soul-stirring style that’s all her own. Vaneese is a six-time Blues Music Award nominee for Soul Blues Female Artist and “Blues For My Father” garnered two BMA nominations for Best Soul Blues Album & Best New Artist Debut. Vaneese recently appeared as a featured guest at Black Opry concerts in Memphis & NYC.

What Nice Folks Are Saying About Stories In Blue

“Vaneese Thomas delivers the gold standard of soul-blues here. It’s a winner on all counts.” — Blues Blast Magazine

“For a blues album there’s plenty of variety but what brings the unity is Ms. T’s magnificent old school, exuberant soul vocals. Stories In Blue may be just seven tracks long but it packs a powerful punch and a soulful passion!” — Soul & Jazz & Funk

“5 stars – This daughter of Memphis music royalty once again earns her own way onto a high tier in the soul universe with a short-but-sweet set list of varied, ear-grabbing co-writes, delivered reliably with the convincing feel and intensity of Ms. Thomas’s vocals.” — Roots Music Report

“All the songs were written by Vaneese, and everyone is a jewel worthy of sitting on top of any crown… Do yourself a favour, get a copy, and savor every moment.” — Blues Matters UK
