Kansas City mourns the loss of Diane “Mama” Ray, a cherished figure in its blues and jazz community. Her longevity and impact on Kansas City’s music scene was exceeded only by her immense talent and big heart. From 22 years of jams at Harling’s Upstairs to 17 years at BB’s Lawnside BBQ, her jams were known around the country and internationally. She always continued to make music regardless of the changes in her personal life and career. She gathered new and seasoned musicians at her jams, and everyone was treated with respect and given the opportunity to perform. The most uplifting news is that her Saturday jams will continue at BB’s Lawnside BBQ and we believe it is the best testament to the amazing legacy she created. Rest in Peace, Mama!
